In
her essay On Photography, Susan
Sontag notes that for the past 180 years photography has been
essentially a tool allowing to record the physical appearance of people,
places and events. It has radically changed the way artists work, choose
their subjects, composition, painting techniques, etc... Thanks to
affordable reproductions in books and publications, photography has also
facilitated the discovery and understanding of other arts and cultures.
New
image-capturing tools, such as digital cameras have opened new creative
avenues by allowing the artist to take total control of the imagery
created. From an instrument of record, photography
becomes a medium of artistic expression. I believe that, were
Leonardo Da Vinci alive and working today, he would not paint on plaster,
wood or canvas; he would use a digital camera and a computer.
Although
tools exist to manipulate pictures and I am familiar with them I
rarely alter the integrity of my originals unless I am looking for a
specific expression.
